Family pictures are bittersweet, on one hand the updated pictures are great, but on the other hand trying to plan them stinks. Picking out outfits for family pictures can be seen as annoying, overwhelming, or even ridiculous! Often when talking about photography sessions I am asked one main question, “What do we wear?” This question often raises concern for clients, however it doesn’t have to. A good photographer will never shy away from helping you pick out color schemes or outfit types. Below I’ve included a few tips for picking out clothes for your family session…
Ask yourself…
Location?
Where are is the shoot? Outside in a field? In a park? Or what about downtown? What will my background look like?
If you are taking pictures in a field then light neutral colors tend to be your friend, however if you are taking them with bright backgrounds then try and stick with muted colors!
Vibe?
How do you want the pictures to feel? Classic and timeless. Boho. Formal. Rustic. Playful.
Season?
Base your colors around the season…
Winter/Christmas – reds and greens.
Spring – Pastel colors or whites.
Summer – lighter colors.
Fall – maroons, navy blues, and deep yellows.
Some Tips…
- Start with your outfit and base the others around it. Be confident and LOVE what you wear.
- Don’t become to matchy-matchy. Add textures and colors that mix well. Don’t be afraid to add a pop of color.
- Basic is a great thing! Often times a basic outfit contrast really well against the backgrounds.
- Layering is your friend. Cardigans, scarves, jewelry, vest, etc.
- Avoid bold patterns or popular trend. You want you pictures to be lasting memories, and often these patterns and trends fade over time.
- Make sure the outfits you chose reflect you! You are paying for pictures and do not want to wear something that you will regret months later. If you are uncomfortable in an outfit change it!
- When you think you have your family’s outfits chosen lay them all on the floor together and confirm they mesh!
Finally…
Family pictures are meant to create lasting memories of time. Enjoy the process and never hesitate to ask your photographer for help!
